The Polytechnic University of Gitega #UPG supported by #Cornell University of the United States of America held a two-day workshop from January 12 to 13, 2023, with the aim of discussing nutruents recovery from urine and human excreta so that they will soon become a source of fertilizer and contribute to the development of the country.
The governor of the province of Gitega, Venant Manirambona congratulated this university for the step already taken in research including the recovery of waste and especially that this waste will contribute to the development of the province in particular and the country in general.
The rector of the Polytechnic University of Gitega, Sayumwe Silas, said he was satisfied with this bilateral collaboration with #Cornell University. He then asked that this collaboration be reinforced through a former student of this university who is a humphrey Fellow at CornellUniversity, focussing his research on Waste management and recycling, Climate change, innovation strategy and entrepreneurship. Supported by these researchers, the Polytechnic University of Gitega will set up a research center to take the lead in nutrients recovery from human waste, mainly excreta and urine.
Nkurunziza Gustave, a teacher at the Polytechnic University of Gitega and a researcher on sanitation pointed out that high-speed urbanization goes hand in hand with sanitation. He also pointed out that with the support of the students who attended this university, this project will soon be realized.
Jean-Marie Nizigiyimana, who is studying waste management and recycling climate change, Innovation strategy, and entrepreneurship, in the United States of America, asked the university students to think big for the future of this university explore the potential they have to the develop the country.
Jean Marie Nizigiyimana has already started a plastic waste processing company and he wants to strengthen this company at the end of his studies by adding more products on what is already being developed from plastic waste.
